Dr Turner has a PhD in Transplant Immunology from the University of Manchester, UK and is a
Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, specialising in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics
(H&I), a clinical laboratory service that assesses compatibility between donors and recipients for
solid organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Dr Turner has over 25 years experience
working in the field of H&I in various UK laboratories. Since 2008 he has been the Consultant Clinical
Scientist for H&I within the Scottish Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS), based in Edinburgh. In this
role he oversees the routine HLA testing provided by the laboratory and advises the local transplant
units on transplant risk relating to HLA incompatibilities. Dr Turner is also involved in education and
training within the field of H&I, chairing the European Federation for Immunogenetics Education
Committee and acting as secretary for the European Board of Transplant Immunology, bodies which
provide qualifications for scientists and clinicians working in clinical labs supporting transplantation.
