Paul Phelan

Paul J. Phelan is an academic clinician at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Scotland, where
he serves as a Consultant Nephrologist and Renal Transplant Physician. He is an honorary
senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. He completed medical school, residency, and
Nephrology fellowship in Dublin, Ireland, and subsequently completed a clinical/research
fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. His research interests are focussed on renal
genetics including the use of genome-wide association to investigate outcomes after kidney
transplantation. At Duke, he worked in the Winn Laboratory investigating kindreds with
familial kidney diseases using next generation sequencing. He has been appointed an NHS
Scotland Career Research Clinician to continue this work in his current post. His other major
interest is modern medical education, particularly the use of online tools and social media.
He is an editor of Renal Fellow Network, is a regular contributor to the AJKD blog and is
involved in several global social media in medicine collaborations. He is a Fellow of the Royal
College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
